Optical Media คือ สื่อที่ใช้เลเซอร์ในการเขียนและอ่านข้อมูล เช่น CDs DVDs
Magnetic Media คือ สื่อที่เป็นรูปแบบของการใช้แม่เหล็กดึงดูดเพื่อพิมพ์ข้อมูล เช่น Floppy Disk หรือเทปแม่เหล็กที่ใช้สำรองข้อมูลเสียงหรือวิดีโอ
Flash Media หรือเรียกอีกอย่างว่า Solid-State ที่ใช้ flash microchip ในการจัดเก็บข้อมูล เช่น แท็ปเล็ต โทรศัพท์มือถือ หรือ USBดังนั้น การทำลายข้อมูลแบบ Shredding เป็นวิธีที่ยอมรับกันอย่างแพร่หลาย ซึ่งขนาดสื่อหลังจาก Shredding แล้วเหมือนกับคอมพิวเตอร์ฮาร์ดดิสก์ที่ไม่ได้มีข้อกำหนดว่าควรมีขนาดเล็กเท่าใด เพราะสื่อชนิดนี้ต้องถูกทำลายข้อมูลอย่างเหมาะสมเพื่อป้องกันการเข้าถึงข้อมูล
ตัวอย่างเช่น แผ่น CDs ที่ผ่านการ Shredding แล้วต้องไม่สามารถใช้งานได้เมื่อนำไปวางบนไดร์ฟซีดีของคอมพิวเตอร์

โดยปกติแล้วทางองค์กร และหน่วยงานต่างๆจะมีคู่มือการปฏิบัติงานและขั้นตอนที่ระบุวิธีการทำลายข้อมูลแต่ละประเภทอย่างถูกต้องที่ควรปฏิบัติตาม ยกเว้นคุณจะได้รับคำสั่งจากฝ่ายบริหารโดยตรงว่าให้ทำลายข้อมูลบนสื่อประเภทนั้นๆแบบใด
